Mystery: A Lethal Deception, Detective Kay Hunter Book 11, Rachel Amphlett
Blog Tour February 16, 2022
DI Kay Hunter knows how to solve crimes. She knows how to lead her team. She knows what needs to be done at each stage of an investigation. But when the victim is her partner, Adam Turner, she is sidelined from the pursuit that means the most to her.
Fortunately Adam’s injuries were not life-threatening. He was, however, the victim of a violent attack. Someone broke into the veterinary clinic he ran, viciously hit him on the head with a blunt instrument, and stole drugs from their locked cabinet.
Another case soon requires Kay’s attention. Three people are killed by an overdose of ketamine. There seems to be someone new trying to capture the local drug trade, someone who does not know how to correctly cut the drugs to prevent lethal overdoses. Could this be linked to the break in at Adam’s clinic? Leads and suspects change almost by the moment as Kay and her team work to prevent more deaths and find the suspect (or suspects).
One advantage to wandering into an established series is that the author has become comfortable with her characters. Rachel Amphlett does not waste much time looking back at previous novels. She introduces her characters with economy and precision. The setting is also well established, but Amphlett does not assume that her readers have been with her for the entire series. She gives enough background to acknowledge there is a history, and enough detail to pick up the story where this book begins. Not every author is as reader-friendly as that.
A Lethal Deception has all of the requisite twists and turns that a detective thriller should have. Some of them are telegraphed, others come more out of the blue. The characters are solid, the plot is appropriately convoluted but not confusing, and this overall is a good addition to any mystery-lover’s shelf. It made me want to check out the back catalog of this author and the previous adventures of this detective.
