Mystery: Final Verdict, A Cavendish & Walker Novel Book 6, Sally Rigby
BLOG TOUR JUNE 22, 2020
Sometimes you find a book in the middle of a series that makes you wonder what you have been doing with your reading all these years. Final Verdict is one of those books. Sally Rigby has written several books featuring DCI Whitney Walker and forensic pathologist Georgina (George) Cavendish. If the others are as brilliant as this one, then I have been missing out on a very special series.
A lawyer from a prominent firm in town is found dead at his desk. At first it appears to be a heart attack, but the autopsy finds an injection site. Toxicology shows he was injected with potassium chloride, the drug used in American executions. At first, no one can believe the man would be a target. A family man with an apparently spotless reputation, Walker and Cavendish do not have any leads to start with.
Both of them also are dealing with intense personal issues. DCI Walker’s mother has dementia and is in a care home. When the carers find a lump on her mother’s breast, Walker’s thoughts immediately turn to cancer. Cavendish is surprised and dismayed when her boyfriend proposes. As both of them wrestle with their personal concerns, another victim dies.
Rigby has set up a terrific mystery with characters who are challenged and challenging. Both Cavendish and Walker can be abrupt, difficult, petty, and self-centered. They can also be caring, principled, and compassionate. Both are highly intelligent, carry a deep respect for the talents and education of the other, and are wholeheartedly committed to finding the culprit and solving the crimes.
Rigby pulls off a delicate balancing act with panache. Without losing the plot of the mystery she incorporates the personal concerns and the relational dynamics that affect Cavendish and Walker. A taut story with multiple layers, I hope that Final Verdict is not the final Sally Rigby book I read.
